First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are part of a two year preparation program, usually lst & 2nd grades. Normally, children begin their preparation in 1st year prep and then continue to 2nd year prep, where they are prepared for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Their preparation is integrated into their normal second grade religious education class curriculum. If your child needs to receive the sacraments of 1st Reconciliation or 1st Eucharist, please call Kristine at (619)276-1248. I’m happy to address any questions you may have! The majority of preparation occurs in the classroom, but parent involvement is also required. Parents meet three times during the year to go over sacramental information they can share with their children. Parents will also receive the workbook “We Discover God’s Paths”, and families are expected to work on this at home as part of the child’s sacramental preparation. First Reconciliation will take place on February 4th and February 13th. First Holy Communion will take place on April 21st for School of the Madeleine students in 2A. For School of the Madeleine students in 2B, it will be on April 28th. For Religious ED students, it will be on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Our sacramental preparation program also accommodates older children who have not yet celebrated the Sacraments of 1st Reconciliation and 1st Eucharist. Older children with no previous religious education are taught in classes grouped by grade level the first year, as well as adapted sacramental preparation classes the second year. In the adapted preparation program, each individual child will be assessed by the program director to determine their readiness to receive the sacraments. In most cases, they will receive 1st Eucharist the second year. Children seven and older, who need all three sacraments of Initiation, participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) the second year.
