Music "forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy" (SC). It is of preeminent importance among the many signs and symbols used by the Church to celebrate its faith (Music in Catholic Worship). Those who devote their musical talent (whether it be by singing or by playing a musical instrument) to the service of the liturgy and the parish community provide an important and valuable service. Of course the entire assembly is a minister of music, because all participate in prayer through song. Yet there are those in our midst who have the gift of effectively leading the assembly's song and enhancing the assembly's sung prayer. Cantors, choirs, organists, pianists, guitarists, and instrumentalists of every sort all contribute to serving and promoting the assembly's fuller song.

The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene has a proud 50-year tradition of making fine music, the music itself serves as an offering of praise and thanksgiving to God. Our parish music ministry serves to inspire and uplift these voices, providing a program as diverse as its people. At. St. Mary's, music for worship spans the entire treasury of the Church's repertoire, from Gregorian Chant and Renaissance motets to the most contemporary literature. Musical leadership at all Masses is provided by the choirs and cantors - both trained professionals and amateurs alike. This ministry is continually seeking new members. If you play an instrument or have a pleasant singing voice, please consider one of our many music-making opportunities. Contact the Office of Liturgy and Music for more information.
